Leslie Odom, Jr. was born August 6, 1981 in New York City, but the family would relocate to  Philadelphia, where Odom attended Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. Odom went on to a degree with honors at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and moved to Los Angeles in 2003.

Odom married actress Nicolette Kloe Robinson in 2012. They met while Robinson was a student at UCLA in 2008. She auditioned for a role on Once on This Island in Los Angeles. Odom, who was working as an assistant director on the project, was tasked to help her get familiar with the ongoing project. And the rest is history–the couple had a daughter in 2017, Lucille Ruby, and in 2020 another announcement was made that the Odom family was expecting; Able Phineas Odom was born in 2021.

Career

Leslie Odom, Jr. studied musical theater in college, and made his Broadway debut in Rent at 17 years old. Odom, Jr. appeared in a Broadway concert version of the production Dreamgirls, and in Los Angeles continued his work in theatre with 2010’s Leap Of Faith before relocating back to NYC–both the show, and eventually, Leslie Odom, Jr.

In 2013 and 2014, he had an eight-episode run in Person of Interest  and would show up in seven episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit between 2013 and 2015.

Following some off-Broadway work in Invisible Thread and Venice, Leslie Odom, Jr. worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda for the first time in a production of Tick, Tick...Boom! It would not be long before he, in the role of Aaron Burr, was nominated for awards for his work on Hamilton including a Tony for Best Actor In A Musical as well as a 2016 Grammy Award for the cast album.

Hamilton Was Risky

Hamilton wasn’t a guaranteed win for Odom. It meant walking away from a tv show offer that featured a “guaranteed contract for half a million dollars”. The risk, Odom says, was worth it even though some thought he was crazy for doing it at the time.

His work on the stage isn’t the only thing Odom is known for. Leslie Odom made appearances on the screen including television’s Smash from 2012-2013. He was also on the silver screen in One Night In Miami, Murder on the Orient Express, Harriet and, yes, Hamilton.

He has been nominated for a variety of awards for his efforts on television and in cinema, including:

  • Academy Award
  • BAFTA Award
  • Critics’ Choice Movie Award
  • Golden Globe Awards
  • Screen Actors Guild Award

And Odom wasn’t daunted by the global pandemic. He and his wife worked together on Love in the Time of Corona–a four-episode series said to be one of the first shot during the pandemic.

It could only happen under the constraints of the pandemic. The production happened at home with a socially distanced crew and help from friends. However, the couple ironically went into quarantine after appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show–DeGeneres the next day tested positive for COVID-19 and the Odoms quickly went into their own quarantine. It’s a great example of the type of creativity required to survive the pandemic as a performing artist. It is also a good indication of how Odom has gotten where he is today.

Music Career

On top of everything else, Leslie Odom, Jr. is responsible for solid recording career. The story begins with a 2014 release of a jazz album simply titled, Leslie Odom Jr.  He would land a four-album deal in 2016 with S-Curve Records. This resulted in a re-recorded, improved version of Leslie Odom Jr. which debuted at Number One on Billboard Jazz and No. 147 on the Billboard 200.

Odom’s 2016 Simply Christmas was a jazz interpretation of Christmas standards and he has released tracks recorded with others and solo for upcoming album projects.

Writing Career

In 2017, Odom dedicated himself to his book Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning, meant as an inspirational book for young readers, written in a style inspired by college commencement speeches. Published by an imprint of Macmillan, Failing Up hit the market in 2018.

What is Leslie Odom Jr.’s Net Worth?

Leslie Odom Jr’s net worth in 2021? Roughly $11 million, according to sources such as  Style Caster and Billboard magazine. What contributes to this net worth? As you can see from the above, an incredibly diverse career in film, television, Broadway, the recording studio, and as an author.

Leslie Odom, Jr. is the very definition of “multi talented” and it’s his consistent success in each of these endeavors that has contributed to the some $11 million the performer, writer, and singer is known for today.

His work in the past has brought in a substantial amount; in 2016 the cast of Hamilton was earning somewhere near $99,000 before going on to net 11 Tony Awards.

And it was no mistake that the cast earned that much even prior to all those Tony awards. Leslie Odom, Jr. was a shrewd advocate for his fellow actors. He represented a group of original Hamilton cast members who demanded more compensation for their work on the production. Odom urged his fellow cast members to reject low-ball offers. Odom’s belief? The results would be worth the effort even if the income generated by the show fell short of other wildly popular Broadway shows like The Book Of Mormon.
