Herb Alpert was born to mother Tillie and father Louis Alpert in Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1935. He grew up on the east side of Los Angeles with his siblings Mimi and David. His first instrument was the trumpet, taken up at 8 years old, and by the time he was a teenager, he was playing at dances. After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1952, he joined the Army and would play the trumpet at ceremonies. While going to college at USC after returning from the Army, he joined the renowned USC Trojan Marching Band.
Herb Alpert’s music career began in 1957 as he began writing and recording music professionally. He wrote several Top 20 hit songs before he became a vocalist at Dot Records. In 1965, he debuted as the vocalist for Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass band, which also included Tonni Kalash (trumpet), Lou Pagani (piano), Pat Senatore (bass guitar), John Pisano (electric guitar), and Nick Ceroli (drums). The band sold more than 13 million albums in 1966.
Over his music career, Herb Alpert has released 28 albums, including 14 that went platinum and 15 that went gold. He has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide, has won eight Grammys, and has been awarded the National Medal of Arts. He is also the co-founder of A&M Records with fellow trumpeter Jerry Moss. A&M Records became the world’s largest independent record company and helped launch the careers of many stars, including The Police, Sheryl Crow, The Carpenters, and Janet Jackson.
Herb Alpert has been married twice, with both relationships producing children. Alpert married Sharon Mae Lubin in 1956 and they had two children – Dore and Eden. In December 1973, he married Lani Hall and they have one child together – Aria.
