I need a break. The Olympics, Cancer, Stress , MFP and Taxes edition.

I haven’t been this tired in a long time. I worked five days this week (instead of my normal four) and I’m freakin’ exhausted. It would have been fine if it was a normal week but noooo this was a work week from hell. One of our dental assistants started her treatment for stage 4 cancer (yeah, that’s happening, a long, sad story), the other assistant decided to quit because she has NO idea what the real world is about and needs a serious wake-up call (super coddled young girl) leaving the rest of the office stressed the eff out.

The only free time I have has been consumed with watching Canada KICK ASS at the Olympics (this post will be live before Canada plays US this afternoon, love you guys but I hope we kick your butts!) I LOVE the Olympics and we have plans to attend the 2022 Winter games no matter where they are (though hoping when announced next year Scandinavian country wins bid). I do feel bad about the Russian mens hockey team though…not that I wanted them to win but feel bad they didn’t make it to semis.

It’s February which means tax time. We’re waiting on hubby’s tax slip from work them I *think* we have everything. Given this months current events (work stress/illness/Olympics) I haven’t gathered any info about claiming my blog on taxes and I’m scared shitless about what I’m going to owe. I have quite a few deductions both personally and blog related so my hope is that we shouldn’t owe but it was a weird year with me being on maternity leave for the first half, unsure how it will affect everything. Anyways I guess we’ll see in a week or two when I have some time.

Totally unrelated but I’ve been giving My Fitness Pal an honest shot to help with tracking/weight loss and while I think it’s a great app I don’t think I can sustain myself long term. I hate that the other day even though my lunch was 75% fruits and veggies I had to use over 200 calories where on weight watchers it would have been 0 points (minus the dressing and hummus I had). I like the logic (in WW) that not all foods are equal and encourages you to fill up on healthy ”0 point” foods. I’ve tried and haven’t quite given up but think I will go back to tracking via Weight Watchers. Does anyone else use MFP and have secret tips? Maybe don’t track fruits and veggies (unless you start eating like 3 bananas/day sort of thing).ย 

Needless to say, I’m looking forward to this weekend. Hopefully getting caught up on blog stuff, maybe getting taxes organized and a lot of good Olympic fun with everything coming to a close this weekend!

  1. Oh, speaking of taxes, my husband got a big deduction on his last salary for his tax and that was pretty painful. ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyways, about on weight loss I’m totally discouraged for my actual weight, I totally gained weight! Next week I will try to watch my food intake and to exercise daily.

  2. That’s so cool you are planning on going to the Olympics! Just for fun, I looked at figure skating tickets in Sochi and found a resale website… most of them were going for over $1,000 each! I think it would be so fun to go though.

  3. I like MFP. It’s a great way for me to see all the crappy food I’m eating and gives me motivation to eat better. I’m not on there to lose weight though so I don’t pay too much attention to the calories, except to make sure I’m getting enough for a day.

  4. If you don’t mind some advice from someone who lost over 100lbs a few years ago …

    It doesn’t really matter what you use – MFP or WW or any tracking device. WW can say it’s 0 points, but you’re still eating 200 calories of food, whether you track those calories or not. If those calories are more than you’re burning off, then you’re not going to lose weight.

    The idea that some calories are better for you than others is a valid one, but they’re still calories and they still exist no matter how you choose to track your food.

    It kind of sounds to me like you might have picked a calorie level that is too low to be safe and sustainable, especially if 200 calories is causing pain. Most women start off eating way too few calories – usually around 1200 or fewer. I’d be happy to talk to you about what I’ve learned about healthy eating, calories, macros, etc. if you wanted.

    (not saying that you have to count calories to be successful .. just saying that they’re still there all the time! ๐Ÿ™‚ )

    • I think so too. Some days I’m crazy active chasing my kid, other days I go to work and crash hard. I need to find a good balance. And I may take you up on your offer. 100lbs is amazing!!

  5. When I read “cancer” in the title of your post my heart went into my throat! I definitely understand your stress, I’ve been feeling very stressed out lately too, I think it’s the weather. Fortunately I’m doing a weekend getaway, and hopefully that’ll ease things a bit. Can’t wait for Spring!

  6. I hear ya. Work has been stressing me out as well. To the point where I dream about it, and not a pleasant “here’s a million dollars raise” kinda dream. The Olympics aren’t helping with productivity- which adds to the stress. Haha. The hockey game today- a nailbiter, I’m sure- will also add to the stress levels.

    I hope the weekend calms down for you and you can enjoy watching Canada win gold on Sunday, right? Right?

  7. I’m so sorry to hear about your co-worker. Puts everything into perspective, doesn’t it? I was only able to watch 30 minutes of free coverage of the mens hockey game before they wanted my cable provider and I don’t have one so I’m SOL! ๐Ÿ™ GO USA though! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I’ve used both WW and MFP, and vastly prefer MFP. WW had me eating way too little calories (less than 1200). Now, I’m losing weight eating 1800-1900 calories/day with about 200 of those from exercise. The community on MFP is much more welcoming I think. And their web page and app work 300 times better than WW!

  9. I’m sorry to hear about your co-worker. That is very sad, and it sounds like a very stressful time for you right now.

    Unfortunately veggies and fruits do have calories in them, so I guess that’s where MFP comes in – I use it and while you can certainly eat more produce for less calories, I still count them.
