Post secondary education is expensive. You have tuition, books, and depending on you situation many other costs ranging from meals to gas and rent. Attending post secondary is often one of the most, if not the most, frugal period in one’s life. You have to learn to stretch your dollar as far as it will go. It’s nice to know that while attending post secondary there are often many discounts available to students and the only prerequisite is a student ID card.
Here are just a few places I was able to score great discounts while attending post secondary, all by flashing my student ID!
Grocery Store. Every Thursday, the two grocery stores close to campus (that were apart of a national chain) offered a 5% discount to students for shopping there. Considering food is a necessity why not shop Thursdays, at these well-stocked stores? 5% every week adds up over a four year degree.
Auto Shop. When I realized my car was going to need winter tires I called around to every mechanic in the city asking if they offered student discounts, a few places outright said no, a few had policies in place for discounts and a few said they didn’t normally but ”if buying four tires could work something out for me”. It never hurts to ask. For the record, I paid $65 less than my boyfriend at the time and we got the same size tire.
Banking. My bank offered free banking for students! This was a huge cost savings. Necessity that I didn’t have to pay for saved me over $120/year. Over my six years in university, that’s over $700 saved, or one semester’s worth of books! To make it even easier you can open bank account online, no need to enter the bank at all.
Eating Out/Entertaining. The city that I live in has quite a few students with many colleges and universities around many pubs and restaurants offer student discounts, some certain days of the week others nightly. Ask around and check out the deals before planning nights out to save money. Our local hockey team offered a steep discount for students as well, with good planning we could hit up $5 fish and chips and hockey game all for less than $20, including a beer!
Clothing store. There was one store that offered a 10% discount to all students. I was able to buy all my scrubs from this store and my husband (boyfriend at the time) was able to pick up his required uniforms for work.
Post secondary is expensive enough and every dollar counts. Look for student discounts and don’t be afraid to ask if a place offers them. With proper planning you can still have a great, frugal time during your post secondary years!
